Preparing Samples with Solids – Automatically

Water sample – before and after automated sedimentation

If you are using either GC-MS or LC-MS; liquid phase samples containing solids can be very inconvenient to work with.

Solid material needs to be removed before the sample is ready for injection, and often has to be removed before extraction.

Failure to do so can result in blockages of syringes, valves and SPE cartridges, and the introduction of involatile or insoluble materials into the analyser leads to increased maintenance and instrument downtime.

Centrifugation and/or filtration provide ways of dealing with this type of sample, but each sample is usually processed by hand.  This is inconvenient and has the potential to introduce human errors.

Of late, a useful range of filtration and centrifugation accessories have become available for the GERSTEL MultiPurpose Sampler (MPS); and these now make the automated clean-up of particulate laden samples an option.

Recently, we have been working – with significant success.  We would like to carry-out some more work on real-life problem samples from customers like you that will enable us to understand the strengths and limitations of automated precipitation and filtration.  With just a little luck, we may be able to offer you a practical solution.

We are looking for partners to work with on this.

If you work with particulate-laden samples and would like to automate what you currently have to do manually, please contact us by email on: or telephone: +44 (0)1223 279210.
